Grandma (embossed) Pinwheels Tutorial

It has been a long way since the last post in my blog. Lot of time without been in touch with my personal quilt, craft and hobby, one at a time ! Well, I mean , I was working, of course, but not posting and writing as much as I would .

First of all, after moving home, I stared an edible garden which makes me feel more than happy, as a vegetarian I like to take from my garden my dairy food : lettuce, rocket, mustard leaves , magetout , spinach
We have planted an apple and cherry tree, quercus, lot of flowers, climbing and rockery plants too. Our small garden it seems now much more green that was before..that's important to me.

But the  most important in our lives it has been the birth of Gina, Gina is a wonderful girl, nice and quiet (quite big now, after 2 months it seems to me LOL ) I went up and down, following her day by day, it seems so fragile when a baby is born !! Now she is on holidays , visiting the rest of the family :-))
I'm now coming back to my blog, I want to show you what is going on in my studio.
Work has been crazy lately, doing curtains and more curtains and I'm  feeling like I'm away on any update from my Etsy Irl Team, others teams at Etsy web, Blog readers, quilting ... etc etc . Even thought, we cannot be everywhere at once, can we ??

I will show you the process of the quilt I'm doing now. Quilting is the best way to keep creativity going.
I want to share my own design , probably is out there made by other quilter, but I wanted to made a 3D Half SquareTriangle (from now on HST ) in a Pinwheel pattern . I love Pinwheel, as shown in most of my Quilts, I made before a 3D Log cabin , I really enjoyed see here , in the Quilter nomenclature called as 'Prairie points ' .
Then instead to do a normal 'picket fence ' block, with 3 bars jelly roll which join them comes up a Pinwheel or Diamond in the centre , what I did was fold the square in a half and sew the entire fabric in HST shape
I have to face the bulk's fabric issue..but I think it worth it to try something different.
See here my trials and results , first I decided the block , after the 3D HST

This is the usual HST (picket fence ) in a 3 bars jelly roll to get a Diamond in the middle

join 4 blocks comes up a Diamond, as said  or  what I did was this one:

 the layout is a Pinwheel  after join 4 blocks the same:

But I wanted even more... make them on 3D , embossed HST and highlight pinwheels over all

Here mine, I used 'Le bouquet Francais ' fabric from Moda French General.

My trick to go faster: first of all
to sew all Jelly roll 3 strips, total width achieve is 6.5" then you will cut squares section of 6.5"

Once I have done, I sewed up triangles in its place.


Yes, of course, I have to undo
a bit for that, but it worth it !

Only for the seam allowance follow the line ! 

I used the plain colours of Jelly roll to make HST gathering Pinwheels

and some small red print also !

To put an example what I mean 3D, take a look to the scissors   ..got it?

Here, how I'm doing now the border using embossed HST too , the block is 4 x 2.5" sq with same 2.5" plain HST in the middle, will be join both sides of the quilt ..it seems Flying geese but also in 3D , take a look:

I will be post further how will be finished , I still have to decided it , at the moment measures are
50 " width by 60 " length , I want to add some more large

Pinwheels or Periwinkles.../ Molinos al viento y flores de primavera ...

En mi ultima entrada aqui me retaba a mi misma como terminar el top de este quilt que ha sido hecho cuidando cada pespunte , tanto como fui capaz. El nuevo proyecto en si mismo era el acolchado ..siempre una decisio'n dificil cuando lo haces con una maquina de coser domestica y vieja como la mia...(la nueva esta de vuelta , no fue una buena decision  :-(
Los colores de este proyecto son colores que desde hace muchos anios me gusta como combinan: rosa-fucsia y verde lima son , para mi , viejos aliados como lo son el blanco y negro para una orquesta...sabeis lo que quiero decir no ? siempre me han gustado combinados.

Pues sin mas ..voy a enseniaros como hice el acolchado. Hay variedad de hilos que uso en funcio'n del dibujo que quiero resaltar ..pero a mi vieja maquina le va mejor el poliester 'Gutterman' y con el he acolchado este proyecto.
1- alrededor de los molinillos, que algunas llaman 'periwinkle', como las flores , he acolchado con 'meandering narrow stitches' (serpenteante linea continua) hasta terminar el blanco del fondo con  hilo blanco que no podia ser rojo en el reverso y por eso he usado hilo transparente de Nylon , de buena marca ,tan fino como un cabello...espero que de buen resultado..eso parece.
2- alrededor de los bloques blancos mas acolchado libre con hilo rosa arriba y rojo en la canilla
3- Lo mas destacado de este caso unas plantillas de estarcido ,unas 25 con papel de seda de un dibujo de lineas paralelas en trenza que se cruzan..copiado del Bouti que tengo en casa . Hilo rosa arriba, rojo detras.#

Me gusta mucho coser sobre el papel de seda y no tener que marcar con marcadores quimicos o colores sobre el quilt...no me gusta nada pensar que voy marcando garabatos que quizas despues no se van o vuelven a aparecer...manias supongo !

I like so much pink fuchsia and lime green colours together..I always loved . Do you remember my last post  ?
A good resolution was to finish neatly a project that started with careful as much I could ..and I like how come up ..
There is a list of thread colours and  brand to use on needle and  bobbin, what I use it depends of block ... in this case I used:

1- White polyester on top and  transparent Nylon thread backing because being a white background and red backing fabric the red stitches could be seen on top.
2- over the green fabric around white I used pink on top and red backing both polyester Gutterman.
3- for stencil I used as well, polyester pink on top and red  back quilt

Binding is machine both sides, with a print red dots and leaves..very nice contrast..I loved.

Better have a look ...and the novelty here is making stencil as a frame with tissue paper and sewing over it ..I don't like to mark new fabric with a pen....I used 25 stencils pattern as a template .

Top Finished ,upcoming project FMQ

Just in case you miss how Top pinwheels was made here  you can take an idea , although in the web you can find lots of tutorials like Jenny from the Missouri StarQuilt Co.as I said in last post.

The Top is ready to be a part of a sandwich (and be eaten lol)  I have to deciced yet what backing will be fine and how to Quilt to avoid be spoiled , because I was conscious at every stitch , doing my best..
I'm afraid how to finish that project...too much white on it , is for that I tell myself  'Upcoming project' ,in itself it is .
Some fun but at same time lot of work to decide about it.

Por si os habeis perdido el principio de esta entrada lo encontrais aqui en las explicacones de conmo lo empece' , aunque el tutorial se encuentra en la red , yo soy seguidora de Jenny, de Missouri Star quilt Company de donde saque las medidas.

El sobre esta terminado y preparado para el sandwich ...au'n tengo que decidir que trasera poner y el acolchado que le va a ir mejor ..dentro de mis posibilidades, no quiero estropear un principio que fue hecho a toda conciencia., por eso lo he llamado: mi pro'ximo proyecto en si mismo...trabajar con blancos me merece mucho respeto.

I chose  that pattern to layout , diamonds shape, I had this clear from the beginning.
Desde el principio tuve claro disponerlo en rombos.

Border is same colour that finished the square top ..allows more breaddth and makes it bigger.
I used only one charm pack.
El mismo color en los triangulos que finalizan el rectangulo los uso para el dorde que le dan mas respiro...y lo hace mayor, ya que solo he usado 1 charm pack.

Parece un verde muy verde..pero es un estampado de pequenios topitos rosas en fondo verde.
It seems all green border but is a beautiful green dots.

Pinwheels , matching triangles / Molinillos, tria'gulos coincidentes

Hay muchas maneras de presentar y coser molinillos..recorda'is ?
Estos son los molinillos que poniamos en el balco'n de ninios para verlos girar con el viento o los comprabamos en las ferias para mostrar orgullosos en nuestras manos ...no habi'a nada mas divertido que desafiar a la ciencia con ellos y una cometa.

There are many ways to show Pinwheels..even sewing them ..Do you remember them?
We bought  as children in Fares to be shown in balconies and terraces...and see them turn around with the wind ..
There is nothing more exciting than challenge science with them !! Isn't it funny ?

No tengo idea como hacerlos en papel..pero me encanta hacerlos en mi ma'quina de coser...
y como hay tantas interpretaciones de molinillos en tela..os muestro la que yo encontre' ideal para mi cuadrante en el blog de Corey Yoder, a quien sigo puntualmente todas sus entradas , podeis consultar el tutorial y confeccionar vuestra versio'n.

I will show you an interpretation of Sewing Pinwheels in a cushion....I do better with fabric than paper...:-))
I love how this cushion turns up ! I saw in Corey's blog , you can find here  her tutorial , I love the fabrics she used , a variety little print flowers from Liberty.
I use an Avalon design by Moda fabrics...I love this print fabrics, were awaiting for a nice project.

Here we are ....isn't it nice stitched in diagonal ? I was excited doing (my best)..Enjoy !

    Terminado con un cordoncillo en el bies.

Finished by a cord inner bias red stripes...all in cotton, wadding fabrics and thread..even the cord is cotton.

Si os acordais de ESTA  entrada , os enseñaba los principos de la colcha mas grande que he hecho hasta ahora, empecé con Pinwheels y plasmé en fotos mis dudas ...como siempre, al respecto de las combinaciones de 'claros y oscuros' , pinwheels enmarcados ? o pinwheels con otras figuras ? y me decidí por una cadena Irlandesa a dos filas alrededor..pero mejor lo veis...

Está hecho sobre la marcha, por mis dudas, y por la impaciencia , ya que no me gusta tener  nada a medio terminar ..no puedo !! lo intento pero quito horas de donde sea ...claro que una ventaja es que no tenemos TV y no puedo engancharme a ella...je je ole , ole !! 

Do you remember THIS post a few days ago ? I had showed you the quilt bigger I ever made.I started with the pinwheels and doubts started as well..as usual ! Should I make them together or  better can be sashed ? 

I begun with 2 kind of different blocks...and at last I made a photo with the final decision :   6 pinwheels blocks sewn together and a ' Irish Chain ' in 2 row all around  to finish best and add brightness  , it has a 15 cm /6 " deep sash in match colour from French General Rouenneries,  for that reason is pieced 'as you go' 

La parte mas dificil de todo el proceso como os podeis imaginar...es como acolchar a la vez que tienes una pieza de 150 cm por 180 cm entre manos...un locura con mi máquina que desde luego, no es una Bernina , una especie de Mercedes Benz del acolchado ...yo me quedé con el Seat 600....Lol 

Aunque lo mas moleto resulto ser atacar los hilos..pues no ha sido un FM seguido ..en cada cuadro hay una flor, en otros hay cruces o distintos dibujos....uff.

I  found a 'few problems' after the top was put together when I realized that I had in my hands  60 by 70 inches Quilt and tried to put into my sewing machine to stitched and quilted....wow !! so difficult but at last mostly successful when  just  I notice , after a 2 days working hard, project had been finished !!

To tell you the true, that I find most annoying is to hide threads..uff !!

Here we go ...what do you think about ?? 

Ha quedado totalmente estilo Francés , ( las telas lo son) , pero lo que al principio me parecía un poco "desteñido"...al añadir la banda en color rojo-caldera , contrasta y mejora mucho el resultado...es lo que tiene el Patchwork...siempre trae sorpresa y casi siempre en positivo..luz y color pueden mejorar un diseño que empezó con muchas, muchas dudas...como siempre .
