Tutorial for the Block DUTCH TILES

I promised to share how was made my 'Hydraulic tiles 'block : Dutch Tiles quilt was called ,
I can't explain all the process, not almost in the way Corey Yoder does...she explain in her book all what you need to do, all steps for a good success making petals applique , she is great , it worth it to buy the book !!

Regarding my Tiles quilt , have you ever seen flooring tiles that you wanted to make a quilt with the pattern shown ??
I did, many times in old churches , in old floors of Modernist houses in Barcelona ..it remembers me new patterns for quilts to do. I took photos many times, and at the end ,this book allow me to make it in a proper manner

Once I bought the Corey Yoder's book ' Playful petals' I started testing with others prints fabrics from my stash  , measured and final block are the same 12  1/2 inches.
I used paper backed fusible web..if it is lightweight that's ok for cotton fabric , but if it is a bit thick consider to trim the centre fusible of the petal at the back , this eliminates extra bulk.. (do see at the pics )
Also you will iron open seam allowances for the petal , so that makes a nice block

Starting now to show the way ...follow  me please !

**But beforehand  IMPORTANT  TIP  ask yourself  what do you want to get a HIGHLIGHTED square or a highlighted circle , which is your preference ? do see  what I mean:

do see the difference , I will show you that one  but my final decision was to make much more remarcable the circle at the Tiles quilt , this one :

1- Making the block (12 .5 " final ) do make first the background :

   Cutting diagonally   6 7/8 inches square you will get  2 HST for the sides..repeat for the 2     sides more  untill get 4 sides of the  9" blue square ..this is the basics of the block

2- Making 4 petals for the block by combining 4 dark prints with 4 lighter colours in order to get contrast :

  Sew together 1 of each 1/4 seam allowance always ..press seams open

 **IMPORTANT ....before to cut the petal shape ...should be added fusible web at the back of the 2 strips joined by an open and press seam allowances

 This is a lightweight  fusible web...no need to trim at the back , but ...
avoid multiples layers by cutting the centre of the fusible web petal if it is thick , you will need only sticky fabric  around the petal before to make blanket stitch , after finished block
do see here a closeup  what I mean :

 
Bellow the thick one :

   Cut the centre before iron it at the 2 strips fabrics  ... voila !

Hope that helps to encourage some of you to make one of those, choose your fabrics , your favourites colours and have fun by playing as a child with geometry

Finished ' Magic Squares' ..

Hi there, a lot of pending information here , which I'm busy lately and I cannot post as much as I wanted, a pity because if I'm posting starting some quilts , and of course, the finish should be shown  , it makes sense  !!,  For instance, I would like post now, what happened when I was finished my last one ... the 'Magic squares ' , it was finished as a decorated bottom bedspread...
also if there is a log table, rustic wood table, can be as a Table topper  or can be hang as a Wall tapestry in a landing , up the stairs.. why not??

This is a Queen bed ..

As you see measurements is for complete a 4.7 ft / 5 ft , the Quilt sides will match the bed sides

Isn't it nice and charm ?! I like the look , rustic and cottage decor !

Table Mat/ Quilted/ Individual acolchado

Este individual es sin duda para los amantes del estilo Retro y de quienes nos gusta las tazas de porcelana estilo Ingles, ademas he usado una tecnica nueva , para mi, de transferir una imagen del papel (impresion NO laser) a tejido (Lino), me encanta el aire Vintage/ Retro que se puede conseguir con esta tecnica. Existen varias paginas web , donde generosamente, puedes descargar las imagines e imprimirlas, en mi caso estoy con  the graphics fairy con esta web las posibilidades son infinitas..ahora mismo encontraras cantidad de Santas e imagenes de Navidad preciosas y con ese aire antiguo que , a mi, por mi edad ,me lleva lejos en el tiempo :0  !!

Pues os dejo con las imagenes de mi recien estrenado 'individual' , a ver si os anima a probar la tecnica del Transfer.

For those who loves Retro style and Vintage images , this table mat would be great to match a china cup over it , English style for a Tea pot Transfer image technique that I got from the graphics fairy  Textiles are from Cath Kidston fabrics , cotton fabrics with a traditional look-like that combines all the flowers retro style . Tutorial 'orange peel'

If I do say so myself , I like how the Southern light invades everywhere and comes full of charm
That seems to me when in my mind I'm thinking on Mediterranean sunlight covering vineyards, warm colours ,orange and red sky , it makes unique landscape .

I love so much the Winter too, yes I do, I like when cold mornings are grey-blue, not red but special light atmosphere  makes an enjoyable day to me and invites me to be warm at home .
And I love, the comings days , the Christmas holidays , the fireplace lighting the room... I remember my childhood at this time

But, what I want to share today, is my last quilt that have been busy making a new process (for me) sewing semicircles... (it make sense for you? ) As a beginner it takes me a lot of patience !

I think is a kind of 'lost-Summer-days' project, I wonder, why instead make a Christmas one I do prefer make a table toper full of bright and colour as a Summer Sunny days ?
The answer maybe is that I find Christmas time ephemeral , flies by ! and always was for me, maybe my effort, requires a project for the whole year...LOL

I want to share not all the tutorial (as usual) because I will let you know the original link later on , but I will explain how I do 'step by step' the 'new process' in my case.
Shoots of the complete quilt (at the end) are made in a winter day, it was foggy, sorry about that.

Here we go :

1- TEMPLATE  that I made, as usual, with cardboard (giggles !)

 
2- MEASSURES :

3- THAT CENTRE IS VERY IMPORTANT in this project

4- Cutting fabrics , in my case is a block with prints on a white background

5- MARKING the centre is important AC- BC

6- Show goes on ! PROCEDURE :

7- HERE WHAT YOU SEE at the back , is NOT AN APPLIQUE ...it will be a 'leaf over a white square '  (sewing them together )

       right side.... the 1/2 job is done

AND.....STARTING AGAIN  ( first point above  in order to make a complete block )

THIS IS THE COMPLETE BLOCK  4 1/2 " sq

lay out as a circle or as a 'butterflies, it seems also to me  .. as you want !

 


Finished as a Table topper with scalloped edges ...I find it worth all that work LOL

Quilted with Free Motion meandering , smalls at centre piece and largest around the binding

In a foggy day ...almost snowing ,  all my garden was frozen !
